I paint to put a color to gratitude, a shape around a feeling, and to remember things that are important. I express feelings that were locked in a moment with swirling patterning and bold colors. First, I build intimacy with the subject matter by sketching it so that when I add brushwork and color, it exudes the feeling of how that moment was. I often work outside, tapping into that feeling of joy, and finish in the studio, capturing the essence of a moment and offering viewers an uplifting, positive message.

As a contemporary artist working in acrylics, I convey not only the scene but also the moment and mood. The moment is fleeting, but the painting allows us to live there a bit longer, to linger, reflect, contemplate, and enjoy. Painting homes, portraits, nature, or archetypes from myths are all subjects that speak to me. I enjoy getting to know others through my art by making creative connections with them. I love playing with paint, tapping into the happy inner child, and making sense of memories. I also study, teach, and paint kurbits, a Swedish Folk Art form.

Interview

What inspires your art practice and keeps you motivated?
My art practice is focused on feeling and learning how to transcribe my feelings in order to be seen. I am motivated to play with colors and to put my experiences onto a canvas.

How does your mission as an artist influence the work you create?
My mission is to put forth the beauty of the world as best I can and to remember it through a unique and colorful lens for myself and others.

Can you share a key part of your creative process that helps you stay focused?
The creative process begins with a walk and a wonder. I try to keep my childlike awe of nature and let my paints flow as freely as my thoughts.

What mindset tip do you rely on to overcome challenges in your art career?
One thing that I tell myself is not to worry about the viewer but to play with the paints.

How do you hope your art impacts the world or your community?
I hope that my art brings people back to what’s important—nature, love, life, and family. My mother’s family is in Sweden, and I work to bring a connection with heritage into my work as well.
